My son came down with a fever, and as usual I’m always a frantic mommy. He has a stuffy nose, but whenever I use the Nose Frida to take out mucus, nothing comes out. He’s so uneasy from inability to breathe properly. Poor baby..
I didn’t have any Vicks Vapor Rub handy, and I’ve been meaning to make my own for quite some time now. I’ve been searching for good essential oils for children, and found very many. Many used eucalyptus, peppermint, chamomile, rosemary, and lavender oils. However, they are all very expensive at the store! When I trekked down to my local health food store, I decided to just make a rub with only TWO ingredients. Coconut oil & Eucalyptus oil. I chose to use eucalyptus oil because it helps regulate the body’s temperature and support its effort in fighting infection during a fever. Eucalyptus oil also relieves sinus congestions too. Perfect, I thought. Just what he needed. The great thing about making my own vapor rub is, I can use the ingredients for other things too. Coconut oil for cooking, and eucalyptus oil for cleaning!
Ingredients for Vapor Rub:
– 3 tbsp Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (or any carrier oil you’d like such as, olive oil or grape seed oil)
-10 drops of Eucalyptus Oil
1) Melt coconut oil in a double boiler
2) Add 10 drops of Eucalyptus oil
3) Mix
4) Remove from heat and let cool
5) Pour mixture in a glass or metal container with an air tight lid.
6) I didn’t buy beeswax pallets, so I let it cool down in the fridge for about 10-15 until it stiffens.

I labeled and dated it. I have read that this mixture is only good for 14 days! Discard after 14 days.
I rubbed this on Nathan’s chest, back, and on his feet. Please do not rub it directly on or under your child’s nose. Eucalyptus essential oil is very potent so it’s very crucial that you dilute it. For more information on how to properly dilute essential oils please check Learning About EOs website.
Other home remedies to reduce fevers I practice:
-Placing cold towel on child’s head.
-Wiping him down with wet towel around his neck, armpits, back of knee.
-Drink plenty of lemon water.
-Make green juice with a lot of ginger and oranges.
I’m hoping his fever goes down by Thanksgiving 😦 I know he would love to play with his cousins, but I will not rush it. I will let nature take it’s course!
Have you ever made your own vapor rub? If so, what ingredients do you use? Comment below! I would love to know!
