Say it isn’t so? Is it true? Why yes! It is very true! Nursing moms (including exclusively pumping moms) can use their breastfeeding supplies as a tax deduction. Thank goodness, because lactation supplies (including pumps) can cost up to $1,000 in the first year of a baby’s life. The Internal Revenue Services decision was made in 2010, but how wish I knew about this when I was still nursing in 2012 and 2013! I really regret not itemizing all the supplies I bought. I spent tons of money on my pump, replacements parts, and products to increase my supply.
The IRS states “The Internal Revenue Service has concluded that breast pumps and supplies that assist lactation are medical care under § 213(d) of the Internal Revenue Code because, like obstetric care, they are for the purpose of affecting a structure or function of the body of the lactating woman.” Many of you moms may already know this, but for those who do not: I hope you saved your breastpump receipt! Believe it or not, it may be time to love the IRS after all.
Are My Breastpump & Supplies Tax Deductible?

According to the IRS: “You can include in medical expenses the cost of breast pumps and supplies that assist lactation.” Which means, hospital-grade breastpump, pump accessories, and nipple care products. Lactation support is also considered as a medical expense, thus visits to a lactation consultant or specialists can be a deductible as well. According to the New York Times “The ruling, which will affect expenses incurred starting in 2010, will allow mothers to use pretax money from their flexible spending accounts to cover the cost of breast pumps and other supplies. Those without flexible spending accounts may deduct breast-feeding costs if their total unreimbursed medical expenses exceed 7.5 percent of their adjusted gross income and they itemize.”
Just remember when it’s time to file your taxes to save all your receipts, especially if you used your Flexible Spending Account (FSA), so you’ll know exactly what to itemize. Don’t hesitate to bring up this topic with your accountant or tax preparer. Also, talk to other parents who has done this before and see how they went about it. If you’re a first time mom, or if you’re pregnant this is something you should keep in mind throughout this year if you’re planning on breastfeeding or pumping.
If you’ve done this before and have used your breastfeeding supplies for tax deductions, comment below and leave some tips for new parents! I am so happy to see that our government is supporting breastfeeding and nursing mothers more, this tax break gives another reason why BREAST IS BEST!
I hope you all have a wonderful week!

I am so glad that this started happening. Some insurances will even buy them for you. They didn't have any of that with my first.

What a great post! I haven't had to pump but I know a lot of my friends who have had to. I'm sharing with them and pinning so if I need it in the future I can find it again.
